A Prediction Market Trader Profited $436,000 on Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.

An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the odds had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
