TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Worries

Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Operations

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.

Within moments of entering one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, messages display black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in interest to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously seen patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious health risks”.
